How do I become a Muslim?
By pronouncing the testimony of faith or ‘Shahadah’ (below) with sincere belief and conviction, one enters the fold of Islam and becomes a Muslim. Upon becoming a Muslim, all of one’s previous sins are forgiven, laying the foundation for a new life of purity and piety.
What is the Shahadah?
“I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allāh and that Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him and his family) is the Messenger of Allāh.”
Whether you have already recited the shahadah or have more questions about Islam, we have a dedicated English-speaking team on hand to support you - at any stage of your journey. Get in touch in whatever manner you feel most comfortable with for a non-coercive, friendly chat.
After you have taken your Shahadah, we will welcome you with a framed certificate and gift pack containing the following:
With intentions to replicate the community of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, in Madina. New Muslims Halifax has been inspired by the migration of the Prophet ﷺ, wherein the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madina and commanded the companions to partner up with their brothers and sisters in Madina.
As a new revert, you will also be assigned a practising Muslim, to show you the ropes and support you in day-to-day activities such as praying or giving charity. This support network is intended to be available for you 24/7, and allow you to familiarise yourself with the community of Halifax and surrounding areas. The assigned buddy will be expected to provide friendship and locate local amenities such as halal food stores or halal restaurants.
This support system established by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, has been replicated 1400 years later, and today in West Yorkshire, Halifax, we intend to foster the love, respect and friendship that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ facilitated for his companions.

Yes, of course, there are no expectations for you to change your identity. The Shahadah (declaration of faith) will erase all your previous sins and grant you a fresh start. All tattoos and piercings before the Shahadah are accepted, but upon taking the Shahadah it will not be permissible for more tattoos/piercings.
No, your Shahadah can be entirely private, we will support you with a long-term plan and ensure your progression within the religion is at a pace which suits you. The clothing you see Muslims wear is often a cultural choice, and many people who attend the mosque will perform prayers in jeans, shirts and traditional Western attire.
Regarding the Hijab, this is exclusively for females, and will not be an immediate obligation.
Many reverts have accepted Islam and remained private, whilst the individuals on our social media were open to sharing their journey. This is entirely your choice. Our team will be on hand to support those who accept Islam privately or publicly.
Islam promotes seeking knowledge and at New Muslims Halifax we have a team of students and scholars who can cover a range of questions. We can facilitate meetings with scholars who can meet physically or virtually.
The declaration of faith will enter you into the folds of Islam, and the team at New Muslims Halifax will be able to provide you with a step-by-step guide to achieve new heights, each year of your development. A buddy system has been developed to support you at all times and ensure you are not alone on this journey.
There are many misconceptions about Islam within the media, and Islam has been portrayed as a hateful religion. However, this is untrue and you will be able to see a brother/sisterhood unlike anything you have seen before. There are billions of Muslims across the world who live in harmony with their non-Muslim brothers and sisters, and new Muslims Halifax aims to develop orthodox understandings, replicate Prophetic behaviours and protect the shared values within our communities. Islam will enhance your character and improve your well-being whilst ensuring you live peacefully in society.
